The Wapen van Amsterdam is the largest still sailing salon boat in Amsterdam and its surroundings. The boat dates back to 1948 and was designed by Herrn Dr. Ryniker, a shipbuilding engineer from Basel, on behalf of the Berner Alpenbahn-Gesellschaft in Bern. The ship was manufactured by shipyard Eugen Herbosch in Antwerp. For over 50 years, the ship served on the Thuner and Brienzersee with Interlaken as its home port. The ship was baptized as MS Rothorn on May 22, 1950.

In 2001, the ship was purchased by Rederij de Nederlanden. At that time, the ship was out of service. At the request of Rederij de Nederlanden, a ship designer created a plan for the restoration. Shipyard Boxce manufactured the required steelwork and engine installation. The company H20P was responsible for the carpentry, all managed in-house and under the direction of Klaas Pater. On September 10, 2004, the Wapen van Amsterdam was christened at the Maritime Museum in Amsterdam by the water board member Johan de Bondt.
