About
Mill site De Otter is a unique multifunctional historical location in Amsterdam-West and has a national monument wooden drying shed that can be rented separately. The recently restored space is suitable for business meetings, workshops, private dinners, knowledge and inspiration sessions, book presentations, talks, and more. It is also possible to book the wooden drying shed in combination with a tour of mill De Otter by one of the millers.
This unique national cultural heritage belongs in the list of Amsterdam attractions like the Rijksmuseum, the Ship, and the Maritime Museum. We proudly and joyfully work on the preservation and sustainability of the mill site where we celebrate the craft of milling and woodworking, add social value to Amsterdam, and make a positive impact.
Together with local initiatives and neighborhood residents, we create a platform for the rich history of our industrial policy in combination with debate, inspiration, art, and design.
Cultural heritage
Wood sawmill De Otter is the oldest existing paltrok mill in the world and still saws like a charm. Built in 1631, the mill originally was part of more than 40 wood sawmills that were established between 1630 and 1638 on a site along the Kostverlorenvaart. De Otter is a unique historical monument that represents the rich history of the Amsterdam wood sawing industry and the Golden Age. Visitors to the site step right into the 17th century and get a behind-the-scenes look at this cultural location in the city.
